After planning a recent trip to his ancestral villages in Slovakia, Joe Gayetsky began viewing the immigrant journey through a new lens. Armed with a smartphone, GPS, a translator, and a rental car, he wondered how his ancestors made the same trek more than a century ago. Their journey didn’t begin at the dock - it began in a remote village. This presentation explores the networks and infrastructures that made mass emigration possible, from ticket agents and rail lines to ports, emigrant halls, and the rapidly evolving transatlantic shipping industry at the turn of the 20th century.

During this program, Linda Debe will demonstrate how to identify individuals hidden behind the tick marks used in U.S. census records from 1790–1840. Learn how to collect and analyze census data using an automated Excel spreadsheet, compare findings with later census records, assign names to household members, reconstruct family groups, and verify your conclusions. Participants will receive a ready-to-use Excel tool designed to help uncover missing details and bridge gaps in their family history research.

Discuss this year's One Maryland One Book selection, “No Sense in Wishing”, by Lawrence Burney in Edgewood Hall Rm 132 on the campus of HCC. Explore how birds inspired modern flight technology and discover how scientists use drones today to help protect wildlife and ecosystems through hands-on experiments and interactive missions led by Aberdeen High School-Science and Mathematics Academy student and Harford Bird Club member, Tyme Anusonti-Inthra. Each child attending must register prior to the event. Weather permitting, be prepared to go outside for a portion of the program.

"Hamilton: An American Musical" inspires interest in the American Revolution with catchy lyrics and irresistible hip-hop beats. What is fact and what is fiction? This program will examine "Hamilton" and why it matters when history and fiction collide. Presented by Amanda Hughes from the State Library Resource Center.
